3 Things You Need to Know About Prayer

October 22, 2019

Jesus left a powerful example of prayer during His time on earth. Of all the things the disciples observed Jesus doing, seeing Him pray impacted their lives like nothing else. It was essential to Jesus’ spiritual connection with His Father —and it’s essential to us as believers.

Yet prayer is often taken for granted. It can seem too vague or “other worldly.” So… how can we reach the same spiritual strength and heavenly intimacy that Jesus did through prayer?

Here are three things Jesus shared about prayer during His ministry that can help you cultivate your prayer life and develop more intimacy with God —which are essential for living a truly meaningful life.

Prayer is your lifeline to God.

“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”
Matthew 6:6

Pray in times of trouble. Pray in times of happiness. Pray for others. Pray for yourself. God is waiting for you in your “inner room.” So go there, “shut your door,” and pray to your heavenly Father.

Prayer is a blank check.

“Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
John 14:13

Jesus gives us a blank check. But whatever we ask for must be in accordance with His character. You can pray confidently when you know that God’s will is being accomplished.

You are helped in prayer.

“But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.”
John 16:13

The Holy Spirit “tunes” your prayers to the very heart of Christ, teaching us to pray as Jesus would. Imagine Jesus praying for you. Listen in. What would He say to the Father on your behalf? By seeking to pray as Jesus would pray, we know how to better pray for ourselves.
