Roles the Holy Spirit

June 14, 2022

As a member of God’s family, it is a great privilege to not just have the Holy Spirit, but to be filled with the Holy Spirit. To be filled until, more and more, He influences your thoughts, your actions… everything about your life.

But how does the Holy Spirit influence you? 1 Corinthians 2:14–15 explains:

The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things…
1 Corinthians 2:14-15

The Holy Spirit helps you make judgments about all things by playing three important roles in your life. He is…

Your Teacher

When you were a new Christian, you likely knew little more than the fundamentals of the faith. As you grew, the Holy Spirit gradually opened things up to you, just as Jesus did to His disciples. Now, as you walk with Him, the Holy Spirit continues to reveal truth to you with increasing knowledge, giving you wisdom to discern good and evil, and leading you into greater and greater maturity.

Your Sanctifier

Everything the Spirit does as a teacher enables His sanctifying work in you. He takes all He teaches and tells you, “Watch it work,” leading you into God’s will. His presence in you increasingly fills you with goodness, virtue, and morality – corresponding to His own – until your will and desires conform to His, making you holy.

Your Comforter

Romans 8:26 tells us, “The Spirit helps us in our weakness,” and He does so through two kinds of comfort: One that comes during a storm and the other when all is calm. The first is transient, and the second is abiding. When He sees you suffering, He communicates to you that He will not give you more than you can stand. His grace will abound.

When you allow the Holy Spirit to teach, sanctify, and comfort you, you’ll discover the fullness and excellence of God’s salvation, being filled with the joy only the Spirit can bring.
