Building on a lie

July 31, 2018
For their heart was not steadfast toward Him, nor were they faithful in His covenant. - PSALM 78:37

Fudge the specs in constructing a building and the whole thing may tumble down. Following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake a commission was appointed to study why the city was so devastated. The conclusion was that more damage was done because buildings were not constructed according to code specifications than by the earthquake directly! Lies had been hidden in the footings, foundations and frames, and the buildings couldn’t stand the shaking.

The Psalmist says the Hebrews in the wilderness had lies in their hearts. They murmured against God, refusing to trust Him. A covenant is an agreement between two parties. God had promised to care for the Hebrews if they would entrust themselves to Him. But again and again, they broke their side of the covenant.

The way to have a stable life midst tremors of crisis is to have a consistent commitment that trusts in God no matter what. Such devotion honors His word and builds according to His “specs.”
