Five grains

November 27, 2018
And as He entered a certain village, ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him … Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered and said, "Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine — where are they? - LUKE 17:12, & 15-17

The Pilgrims lived initially at the precipice of starvation. Finally, Governor William Bradford rationed each 5 grains of corn a day. When things got better, Bradford didn’t want the people to forget, so at every Thanksgiving meal he had five grains of corn laid at each plate.

Think about your “five grains.” For me, one would be the bell I ring when I have the flu and need something. Another of those “grains” would be a hammer, representing opportunity in our country for everyone to earn a living and advance. A third “grain” would a light bulb, symbolizing our affluence. Fourth is the Bible, because without it I wouldn’t know God and this free, prosperous nation would not exist.

The fifth and most important would be a cross—this above all—because it makes sinners like you and me able to live forever before Holy God. Make your heart a Thanksgiving plate, and put your five grains there, then thank your Father for every one of them!

TODAY’S FOCUS
Lay out your five “grains” and give God thanks for each.
