Get your heart right

August 14, 2018
A wise man's heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man's heart directs him toward the left. - ECCLESIASTES 10:2

In 18th century France, prior to the Revolution, representatives in the National Assembly loyal to the king sat on the right, and those opposing on the left. The right supported the royalist status quo, and the left pressed for change. The idea sticks today in the designation of the two wings of political thought.

But political divisions are not the focus of Solomon in Ecclesiastes. Throughout the Bible, the right side of the spectrum symbolizes good choices and the left evil. In Latin, the word for “left-handed,” for example, means “sinister,” while that for “right-handed” signifies dexterity. The Latin labels are unfortunate. My wife, Jo Beth, was left-handed, and “sinister” would not have described her.

In MATTHEW 25, Jesus speaks of the last judgment, and says the “sheep,” those blessed for eternity are assigned to the right, while the “goats,” destined for judgment, are to the left. So, get your heart right spiritually, and you won’t be left behind!

TODAY’S FOCUS
To get your heart right before God, you must make the choice to “steer” it toward Him in every situation. Pray for wisdom and strength to do that.
