Light the Fire Within

May 25, 2018
For it came about when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, that the angel of the LORD ascended in the flame of the altar. When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground. -JUDGES 13:20

When the Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City, the Olympic Torch passed through Houston, and I had the honor carrying it a certain distance. It was a double honor, since the Torch was designed by a dear friend whose wife had been my wife’s college roommate.

The Torch weighed three and a half pounds, and symbolized fire and ice. The shape was that of icicle, and a flare of copper represented the fire. The Olympic Torch I carried bore the words, “Light the Fire Within.”

The experience of Manoah, father of Samson, shows us the power of the “fire” within us. An angel appeared to Manoah telling him about the son he would sire, and Manoah built an altar to commemorate the angelic visitation. Sacrifices were burned on the stone platform, and the angel himself rocketed upward on the flame.

This is a picture of the prayer of a heart aflame for Christ. An angel is a “messenger” of God. Prayer is like a flame arising from the altar of our heart, carrying the message to God Himself!

Light the fire within through a lifestyle of dynamic prayer, arising from your heart.

TODAY’S HEART FOCUS
Begin your prayer today with the question of the disciples, “Lord, teach me to pray.” Ask the Lord to sharpen your desire to “pray without ceasing.”
