Overcoming vertigo

Pilots are subject to vertigo, a confusion of the horizon, causing up to be confused as down and down to be mistaken as up. Disaster results from vertigo. Sometimes, the moral and spiritual heart experiences vertigo. The cultural horizon seems to change. What was once good is termed evil and even things once seen as repugnant become popular movements.

Pilots of airplanes must make a crucial choice, to trust their instruments or their senses. The dials show objectively whether a plane is flying upside down or not. Yet the flyer feels like he’s right-side up. His subjective experience tells him one thing and the objective instruments another.

When the heart experiences moral and spiritual vertigo, unable to see clearly what is right and wrong, we must look to the objective revelation of God’s word. It is the “instrument” that will keep us on the right course, in the right position and right altitude and save us from death itself! Trust the truth, not your confused heart.
