The drunk heart?

August 03, 2018
As for Hannah, she was speaking in her heart, only her lips were moving, but her voice was not heard. So Eli thought she was drunk. - 1 SAMUEL 1:13

“Hannah” has gotten a bad rap in contemporary lingo, associated with being “hard-hearted,” and even back in biblical times she was wrongly labeled! The mother of Samuel was a pure woman. One day she’s praying in the depths of her heart, and her mouth moves with the silent expressions within. Eli, the priest, concludes she’s drunk.

Hannah was in good company. Centuries later, Jesus’ disciples would be accused of being drunk because of their Holy Spirit-generated ecstasy of heart. (ACTS 2:15) Eli added two and two and got five, and in doing so revealed two things. First, he showed his own lack of discernment and also the low state of worship in that period, when drunks might indeed have been at the altar.

If your heart is passionate for God, people will misjudge and mislabel you. Immature people delight in being “misunderstood.” Don’t try to be controversial and mislabeled. But neither let people’s opinions quench the passion of your heart for God.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Seek God for the resolute strength to live for Him, even when others criticize and misjudge you.
