The Ready Heart

February 23, 2018
For He established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers, that they should teach them to their children, that the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children, that they should put their confidence in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments, and not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not prepare its heart, and whose spirit was not faithful to God. – PSALM 78:5-8

An athlete’s heart weakened by hard partying is not ready for the big game. A soldier whose heart is tangled in burdens can’t focus on the battle (2 Timothy 2:4).

Jesus often teaches about preparedness. In a parable He talks about virgins not prepared for the bridegroom’s arrival (Matthew 25:6-13), and He warns about followers not ready to set out on mission because of unresolved affairs (Matthew 8:21).

Our hearts must be ready to respond because, as Psalm 78 shows, other generations depend on it. What keeps your heart from being ready to leap into action?

TODAY’S FOCUS
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal elements that keep your heart from being ready to spring into action at God’s command. Confess these things as sin, and receive Christ’s forgiveness. Ask God to give you a heart of readiness.
