The fallacy of ‘only believe’

October 03, 2018
You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe and shudder. - JAMES 2:19

As a child I was taught a misleading chorus: “Only believe… all things are possible… only believe.” Not so. We’re not saved by beliefs. We’re saved by the historical reality that Jesus Christ died on the cross in payment for our sins, and rose again to give us His new resurrection life.

As we saw previously, if that didn’t happen historically, it’s no more real than a Greek myth. Because faith in Jesus Christ is based on that which really did happen in real time and space. When we believe in the Christ of history, we partake of His historical accomplishment.

Faith is entrusting your whole weight to something. Believing is not leaping out into the dark, but standing on the solid substance of historical fact. The believing heart is a resting heart.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Let the peace of God envelope your heart, the peace that comes because you stand on solid reality in Christ.
