Humble Ourselves

"Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, and straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built on remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire."1 Corinthians 3:12-13
How do you build a life that lasts? Our scripture says we should build with quality materials – gold, silver, and precious stones – on the foundation of Jesus Christ. Such materials are enhanced when passing through fire, leaving intangible qualities lasting beyond time. On the other hand, a life built with wood, hay, and stubble is one of expediency and quick fixes – a mere façade of righteousness built under our own power. These temporary, shabby qualities of life will be consumed in the fire, leaving nothing behind on earth.
Which life will we build? When we arrive in Heaven will we hear “Well done, good and faithful servant” or will we set off Heaven’s smoke alarms? Let’s make sure we’re building lives with lasting quality.
