Empty Calories

"Do not be carried about with various strange doctrine. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them."
Hebrews 13:9

If you’re trying to lose weight, you are familiar with the term “empty calories.” They are those foods or drinks that are calorie laden but nutritionally void. The same is true spiritually. Ritualism, legalism, good works, perfect attendance, and all our efforts to please God can lure us into thinking they will make us strong spiritually – but they are empty calories. What nourishes us? What provides what we need for spiritual growth, health, and strength? Two ingredients: grace and truth.

Yes, grace, God’s unmerited favor, and the truth of God’s Word are the “super foods” that provide nourishment for the Christian. So be on guard against empty calories – physically and spiritually – and feast on the “all you can eat” free calories of grace and truth. Your body and your spirit will be strengthened.
