Why did David, who was skilled with a sling, pick up five stones when he went out to fight Goliath? Some have speculated that it was because Goliath had brothers, but I don’t think that is the reason. I think those five stones represented something no one except God would observe.
You know what it was? Humility. Humility is when you are a champion, but you know that without God that is all you are. David said, ‘The victory belongs to God.’ He knew where his strength came from, and he wanted God to get all the glory. Those five stones indicated David’s commitment to walk humbly with His God. And that, we know from His Word, is what delights our Heavenly Father.
