Going through the motions

July 29, 2018
FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, AND WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES, LEST THEY SHOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, AND HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I SHOULD HEAL THEM.' - MATTHEW 13:15

The dull heart merely goes through the motions. I heard a preacher say once that he could stand in the pulpit and go through the motion of preaching in his sleep. He could prop himself against the podium and drone out the words, passionless and without much thought because he had been doing it so long.

Thank God that’s not true for other preachers I know. Unfortunately, it’s not only true that a few preachers lose their fire, but so do some who sit in the pews. They hear sermons and religious platitudes for so long their hearts get coated with layers of sluggishness. They go through the motions of religion.

But when the heart gets sharp, it understands. They put together all they’ve heard and read. The Gospel makes sense. They see what was once invisible to them. They get the meaning of speech that was once a foreign language.

When the heart understands, we no longer merely go through the motions, but there is spiritual breakthrough and revival!
