Healing the Spiritual Heart ‘Murmur’
Therefore, just as the Holy Spirit says, “Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as when they provoked Me, as in the day of trial in the wilderness, where your fathers tried Me by testing Me, and saw My works for forty years.” - HEBREWS 3:7-9
The cardiologist hears a swishing noise in the patient’s heart and calls it a “murmur.” This means a structural problem with one of the heart’s four valves. There’s also a spiritual heart murmur. The Hebrews suffered this ailment in the wilderness. God gave them manna and they complained, so He gave them quail. They lamented their wondering, so God gave them a pillar of fire at night and a cloud-stack by day. They arrive at the Promised Land, but moaned that giants were there.
Spiritual heart murmur is a complaining heart, characteristic of contemporary consumer religion. This heart follows God for what it can get out of Him. The cure is the grateful heart.
When Jesus was challenged to feed 5,000 and had only morsels of fish and bread, He didn’t murmur over the insufficiency, but “gave thanks” (Mark 8:6). Gratitude cures your murmuring heart!
