Idol Hearts
"Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man – and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things."Romans 1:21-23
A character in a Dostoevsky novel famously says that if there is no God then everything is lawful; all things are permissible. So if someone denies the true and living God, they are apt to make anything and everything into a god, an idol. The ancient Greeks had gods for everything. In fact, they even had a statue for an “Unknown God” in case they missed one!
We can become idol makers, too. That’s right. Whatever takes up most of our time, resources and thoughts is an idol in the making. Unlike Dostoevsky’s character, however, we know there is a God who commands us to worship Him and Him alone. So let’s ask God to show us any idols we may have. Then let’s renew our faith in Him – the true and living God – and shut down the “idol factory” in our lives.
