More than memorizing

September 27, 2018
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. - PSALM 119:11 (KJV)

Getting God’s word into your heart is much more than merely memorizing it. Years ago, I knew of an evangelist who had memorized the entire New Testament. That’s an admirable and incredible accomplishment. But he would be the first to say that memorization is not enough.

Yesterday we saw that Elisha healed Jericho’s polluted headwaters by pouring in salt. But had the salt stayed merely on the surface, it would have been useless. So when the word of God goes into our hearts it must penetrate. “Hid,” means to “hoard” something, like a treasure. It’s the idea of getting all you can, and holding onto it like a reserve of gold or silver.

When you treat God’s word like that, says the Scripture, it will keep you from sinning. People make mistakes often because, when glittery temptation presents itself, there’s nothing that outshines it in the person’s mind. But if God’s word is the gold treasured in your heart and the best temptation can offer is brass, it’s a “no-brainer”!
