Potluck

November 28, 2018
Therefore when you meet together, it is not to eat the Lord's Supper, for in your eating each one takes his own supper first; and one is hungry and another is drunk … So then, my brethren, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. - 1 CORINTHIANS 11:20-21 & 33

For many families the Thanksgiving feast is like a huge potluck meal, with various households bringing their favorite dishes. In one church I served there was an affluent family who showed up for every potluck supper. She would bring the skimpiest dish of all. After the meal, someone would say, “Don’t waste anything; go back to the table and take something home.” The gal who brought the saucer of morsels would leave with a banquet. There were hardly any leftovers for anyone else!

Church potluck suppers grew out of the love feasts of the early church. The focus was to be on Jesus, and then others in the community of faith. Some of the Corinthians had greedy hearts, and the point was lost. Don’t lose the point of Thanksgiving from your heart. Look first to Jesus and be grateful for and gracious to all at the table with you.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Try to remember all the people with whom you’ve shared a Thanksgiving dinner through the years—including this one—and give God thanks for them, living and dead.
