Tangled passions
Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. - 1 JOHN 2:15-16
Sometimes the heart’s passions get tangled as a jungle. A man married a widow with an adult daughter. Then the man’s father wed the widow’s daughter, which made the man’s step-daughter his step-mother and his wife the mother-in-law of her father-in-law. Then the man’s step-daughter, who was also his step-mother, had a son. That meant the child was his wife’s grandson, which made the man grandfather of his half-brother!
This confusion characterizes people who want to love God but at the same time give their hearts to the world. They attempt to set their hearts on loving God, Who is Spirit, while being passionate about the flesh. Such folks want to see supernatural truth while their hearts throb for the spangles dangling before the physical eye. Tangled people want a heart of humility while at the same time cherishing pride.
The way to untangle your passions is to center your heart on God. “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness,” said Jesus. (MATTHEW 6:33)
