The Growing Heart

April 23, 2018
But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. – 2 CORINTHIANS 3:18

In Christ, we start at the finish line. Justification is an event, something that happens the moment we receive Christ. At that instant, we are forgiven, the accusation against us torn up, and forever we stand without condemnation. (Colossians 2:14; Romans 8:1-2)

The event of justification launches us into the process of sanctification. This is growth toward what we already have. If we lose the focus on growth, we will not experience in this world the treasure we have in Christ. Sanctification, to paraphrase the Apostle Paul, helps us “apprehend” or grasp the purpose for which we’ve been “apprehended” or grasped by God. (Philippians 3:12)

My late wife Jo Beth prayed that she would hunger and thirst for God’s Word. God answered her prayer by awakening her every morning by 5 a.m. The first activity of her day was to study the Scripture and pray. The goal of spiritual growth is a heart fully developed with the “glory,” the character of Christ. Spiritual growth is not to become more religious, but more Christ-like.

Today’s Focus
Ask God to increase your hunger and thirst for His Word, leading to accelerated spiritual growth in your life.
