The Hung-up Heart
… but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. - PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14
Shaq O’Neal, the basketball star, says his stepfather gave him the passion to succeed in the game. For one thing, Phil Harrison wouldn’t let his stepson keep his trophies in the house. Reportedly, Harrison feared the trophies would get Shaq more focused on past accomplishments than future goals.
When the heart gets hung up in the past, momentum is lost. Some people set up “trophy rooms” in their heart. There’s nothing wrong with celebrating accomplishments, but if your heart is primarily a shrine of your “good ole’ days,” it loses its future focus. Give a quick hoorah to what you achieved yesterday, and then focus on the future. That’s the way you move forward.
TODAY’S FOCUS
Thank God for enabling your past achievements. Ask Him to prepare you and help you focus on what lies ahead.
