Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
-PROVERBS 3:3
Frenchman Jean-Jacque Rousseau believed the inner human being as a tabula rasa, a “blank slate,” born good but defiled by culture. God’s truth shatters this idealism: “In sin my mother conceived me” (Psalm 51:5), and “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
People are not hapless victims of society’s polluting influences; instead they willingly give the heart tablets to the powers of darkness. But the Bible shows that when we give our hearts to Jesus, He erases the filthy scrabble and gives us each back a pure, clean heart. The devil would love to fill it up again with sordid scratching, but we are to allow only the Lord to write on the tablet of our heart through His Holy Spirit.
He pens on our inner person kindness and truth. Truth is principle and kindness is action. It is through this combination inscribed on the heart tablet that we are able to live effectively on the internal and external levels.
