Variations of the heart

September 01, 2018
I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to live in harmony in the Lord. - PHILIPPIANS 4:2

Relationships are harmonized when varying hearts are tuned. “Euodia” came from a word meaning “success,” and “Syntyche” from “lucky.” Both women’s names reveal the desires of their parents for their little girls to do well in the world. These women not only had different names, but different hearts that sometimes collided.

All churches and groups have people whose hearts beat in varying ways. There are, for example, “thinker” hearts. They love to contemplate ideas and analyze concepts. “Feeler” hearts like tenderness and share groups with tears and hugs.

Paul didn’t ask Euodia and Syntyche to live in uniformity, but in harmony. So we should not force everyone to be alike, but to work together to make the variations symphonic. In an orchestra this is done, not by making all the instruments a cello, but by all the musicians playing their various instruments focusing on one conductor. Variations of the heart can make beautiful music by following the Lord as the Maestro!

TODAY’S FOCUS
Think of someone whose gifting and style is the opposite of yours. Pray God’s blessing on the person, and ask the Lord to help you work in harmony with him or her.
